NEVER TELL US THE ODDS
There are a lot of plotlines in science-fiction that pit humanity up against insurmountable odds. But generally in fiction those odds never play out the way math says they should, and the story ends up being one of redemption and believing in the improbable and everybody lives happily ever after. Mostly.
People say Shingeki no Kyojin / Attack on Titan is violent. That it shows gruesome deaths and lots of gore. That’s all true. But what we think is that it shows those odds playing out. A lot of good people die in the process of trying to improve humanity’s odds. And somehow hope is even more significant when you’re in this kind of utterly hopeless situation. Faith when you think you might win is one thing. Faith when you’re pretty sure you’re going to die doing the right thing is something else entirely.
