After striking an unprecedented deal with Sony to share creative control of Spider-Man, Marvel Studios decided to bring their resident web-slinger back to his roots, casting the young, fresh-faced Tom Holland as a high school-aged version of Peter Parker. Though Spider-Man is also slated to appear in Avengers: Infinity War, Marvel has yet to allow Holland to read the entirety of the Avengers: Infinity War script out of fear that he might spoil it prior to the film’s release.
Holland’s lack of knowledge about the upcoming superhero blockbuster came to light during an interview with the Toronto Sun, where he revealed that his loose lips may have caused some of the higher-ups at Marvel to take precautionary measures.
“I don’t know anything about it or what it’s about,” Holland said. “I know who the villain is, but that’s it. They don’t let me read anything because I’m so bad at keeping secrets.”
Obviously, keeping the key details of Marvel’s most ambitious film to date secret is of the utmost importance to the studio, and — given Holland’s track record when it comes to potential spoilers — their preventive measures certainly aren’t without reason. After all, earlier this month, Holland revealed in a Facebook live interview that Spider-Man: Homecoming would be the first chapter in a planned trilogy of films before remarking, “Yeah, well, now you know, now you know. Sorry, Marvel, whoops!”, which suggests that this may have been something the studio was looking to keep under wraps for the time being.
Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers: Infinity War boasts a sprawling ensemble cast that includes Robert Downey Jr., Josh Brolin, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddleston, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Olsen, Sebastian Stan, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Bettany, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Benedict Wong, Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, Dave Bautista, Pom Klementieff, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Holland and Anthony Mackie.
The film arrives in theaters May 4, 2018, with the untitled sequel opening May 3, 2019, but you can still catch Tom Holland’s wall-crawling hero in Spider-Man: Homecoming, which swings into theaters July 7.
